Annotated Bibliography
The “Campus Based vs. Community Based HIPs and Student Retention” project consisted of a research paper, narrated PowerPoint presentation, and data visuals highlighting the differences in two-year retention rates of college students involved in campus-based and/or community-based HIPs (high-impact practices). This project utilized real data collected by the school from 2011-2017 which was provided to our class by the Director of Global Initiatives at the University of Washington. Our research contributed to the school’s mission in identifying ways to improve student retention and success rates.
I selected this project for my portfolio because it demonstrates my ability to identify a specific challenge and develop a thesis to guide my research. This project also highlights my skills in using the visual analytics platform, Tableau. Not only did I advance my skills in Tableau through this project, but I also learned the importance of graph mechanics, graph choice, and graph aesthetics in successfully delivering clear and concise information to my audience.
-Rosado. “Catalogue Entry 2”. Lambert, Dr. Amy. BIS 300 Interdisciplinary Inquiry. Winter 2021.
This essay focuses on the amount of waste produced by the United States and our struggles in properly recycling that waste. We fall far behind most other developed nations in this regard. My essay touches on specific challenges and ways we might improve.
I selected this piece for my portfolio because it demonstrates my ability to think creatively in solving problems. In this essay, I outline several ideas for improving education around recycling such as using social media to distribute training videos, providing customer performance reports, creating educational apps, and offering incentives for customers who increase their recycling efforts.
The “Elkhorn Coral Project” is a narrated PowerPoint presentation featuring one of the most critically threatened species of coral in the world. In this presentation, I provide the viewer with a general overview of the species and then highlight the environmental conditions that are leading to its demise. Additionally, I describe some of the innovative solutions being explored to recover this important species.
One of the reasons I included this piece in my portfolio is because I am passionate about the ocean, and I know that coral plays an important role in keeping our oceans healthy. Not only did I want to raise awareness, but I wanted to increase my own knowledge around this subject. I also included it because it required a lot of research and analyzing of complex data. I discovered there was conflicting information online, likely since this subject has been researched and written about for decades. This required analyzing many resources, cross referencing the information, and narrowing it down to the key points I wanted to touch on.
This essay was in response to the midterm exam question, “If race is a social construct, then why does systemic racism continue to exist today?” In this paper, I discuss the origins of racism, how our societal structure has contributed to the problem, and how Derrick Bell’s theory of “interest convergence” may be the most significant reason racism continues today.
I selected this essay for my portfolio because it highlights my writing style while also demonstrating my critical thinking skills and ability to synthesize the large amount of information covered throughout the quarter, identifying the most significant points. I provided the reader with clear examples as to why racism continues to permeate our society. I also included this in my portfolio because the subject matter is so relevant, and it is important to educate and raise awareness as much as possible.
“Orbit” is a multi-channel video installation representing the past, present, and future. Original video footage was captured by group members over several weeks and then assembled into a 6-minute video presentation. A disco ball was hung from the center of the space reflecting tiny mirror images from the video projection. The accompanying audio included eerie space-like sounds, as well as voice-overs from each team member expressing memories and hopes for the future collected anonymously from classmates. This installation was meant to leave the audience with feelings of nostalgia and hope.
I chose to include this piece in my portfolio because it was my first experience incorporating site and space into video art. This was a group project and therefore, teamwork, coordination, cooperation, communication, and accountability were paramount to its success. Our team took this from concept to delivery working with limited resources. This required a lot of brainstorming and trial and error to achieve a professional and meaningful presentation. Each team member was responsible for capturing, selecting, and editing their own audio and video. My video portion consisted of basic everyday items which I edited to make them appear futuristic. This demonstrates both my creativity and video editing skills.
-Rosado. “The 2nd at 4”. Yum, Professor Samuel. BISMCS 472 Advanced Media Production. Summer 2021.
“The 2nd at 4” is a short narrative film about a misunderstanding between friends. The two friends engage in an argument over one of them missing the other’s birthday party. They later make up and decide to go to lunch and for a walk.
I selected this piece for my portfolio because it illustrates many of the fundamentals of filmmaking such as shot selection, composition, framing, lighting, audio, two-person dialogue, and match on action. I teamed up with another student which was such a positive experience that we worked together on the next project as well. We were able to play off each other’s strengths and learn from one another along the way. We did everything from writing the script and storyboarding to filming and directing. We each did our own version in post-production, and it was exciting to see the two versions come to life.
This was a final essay in my Media and Communication class. We were required to watch the documentary, The Social Dilemma, and then write an essay responding to the question of whether the film is a counter-hegemonic challenge to Big Tech.
I chose to include this piece in my portfolio because it was a comprehensive piece of writing capturing many of the key theories in media and communication studies. After careful examination of the film, I selected key scenes to support or counter the claim of it being a counter-hegemonic challenge to Big Tech, taking into consideration the competing perspectives of relevant media scholars encountered during the quarter. Not only did this essay demonstrate my analytical skills, but also my ability to summarize, organize and frame the debate.
-Rosado. “Video Confession”. Bodle, Carrie Professor. BISIA 344 Video Art. Spring 2021.
“Video Confession” is a 2-minute first-person video confession. This piece incorporates original video footage with found media and a voiceover narrating my deepest fears.
I selected this piece as it required me to be vulnerable and admit my fears to an audience of peers. Preproduction included script writing and storyboarding. All original video and audio were captured by me with careful attention to lighting and audio. I used a green screen and found media in the background to add a dramatic flair. I learned the importance of scripting and storyboarding in the creation of successful videos. I was also able to expand on my video editing skills during this project allowing me to create more sophisticated films moving forward.
